Former Black Stars midfielder Laryea Kingston has outlined a strict selection policy he would adopt if given the opportunity to coach the Ghana senior national team.
Speaking to 3Sports, Kingston said his selection criteria would place significant emphasis on the level of competition in which a player operates, insisting that senior national team players should ideally be competing in one of the world’s top 10 leagues.
“If I am given the Black Stars team to coach, I will look at so many factors before you qualify to play for the national team, including the level of league competition that you are playing in.”
Kingston added that playing outside the top 10 leagues would not automatically rule a player out, but such a player would have to be exceptional to earn a call-up.
“A senior national team player should be playing for any of the top 10 leagues in the world. If not, he must be extraordinary.”
His comments come amid ongoing discussions about player selection and the criteria that should determine who earns a place in the Black Stars.
The Black Stars have endured a difficult start to their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign, losing their opening two matches and sitting bottom of Group C.
