OBUASI, After four long years without top-flight football, the familiar roar of Premier League supporters returns to Obuasi today as FC AshantiGold 04 play their first home game of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.
The occasion marks a new chapter for a football town that was left without top-flight action following the dramatic fall of Ashanti Gold SC, whose expulsion from the Ghana Football Association brought an end to an era at the Len Clay Stadium.
Ashanti Gold’s final Premier League campaign came in the 2021/22 season, before the club’s punishment over a match-manipulation case involving Inter Allies took full effect. The controversy, which dated back to the 2020/21 season, eventually resulted in the club’s expulsion and demotion from Ghana’s top flight.
With the club gone, the lights of the Len Clay Stadium dimmed on Premier League football.
For a community deeply connected to the sport, the absence was more than just the loss of weekend fixtures. Obuasi had lost one of its biggest sporting attractions and a club that had become an important part of the town’s identity.
But today, the wait is over.
Premier League football is back in Obuasi.
In 2025, investors acquired Division One side Bekwai Heroes FC and subsequently renamed the club FC AshantiGold 04. The new club has adopted the traditional yellow-and-black colours associated with Ashanti Gold and will make the Len Clay Stadium its home.
The new-look AshantiGold side began its Premier League campaign away from home, earning a 1-1 draw against Port City on matchday one.
Now, they return to Obuasi for the moment supporters have been waiting for their first home league game since the town lost its place on Ghana’s top-flight football map.
Standing in their way today is Vision FC, as FC AshantiGold 04 prepare to welcome Premier League football back to Len Clay.
The significance of the occasion goes beyond the 90 minutes.
For supporters who watched the old Ashanti Gold compete at the highest level, the return of yellow and black to Len Clay will inevitably stir memories. For a younger generation, it presents the opportunity to experience Premier League football in Obuasi and become part of a new story.
FC AshantiGold 04 may carry a familiar name, familiar colours and play in a familiar stadium, but this is a new beginning.
The challenge now is to build a new legacy — one that can restore pride, reconnect the club with its supporters and establish Obuasi once again as one of Ghana’s important football centres.
After four years of waiting, the stands will once again fill, the yellow and black will once again dominate Len Clay, and the sound of top-flight football will once again echo through Obuasi.
