The Minority in Parliament has called on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately dismiss the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, over allegations surrounding a visa facilitation arrangement linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Minority is also demanding that Mr. Ampofo Ankrah step aside while investigations into the matter are conducted, arguing that his continued stay in office could undermine public confidence in the process.
The call was made by the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, who addressed journalists on the controversy on Thursday, September 17, 2026.
According to the Minority, the allegations involve approximately US$600,000 reportedly generated through a visa-related arrangement involving a private entity and individuals associated with the NSA.
Mr. Assafuah alleged that prospective travellers were charged amounts of up to US$8,000 for assistance with travel arrangements ahead of the World Cup. He further claimed that promotional materials for the service were displayed at NSA offices and around the stadium.
The Minority says the circumstances surrounding the alleged transactions require a full and independent investigation, particularly given reports that the NSA Director-General and some officials have been questioned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
“We therefore call on the President to dismiss the Director-General of the National Sports Authority with immediate effect, or, at the very least, require him to step aside pending the conclusion of the investigation,” Mr. Assafuah said.
