Lionel Messi has reached an agreement in principle to become the majority owner of Spanish second-division side Eldense.
The Argentina star is set to acquire the shares held by Colombian investment group Grupo TH, with the deal expected to be completed soon, subject to legal procedures and approval from Spain’s High Council for Sport.
Eldense, based in Valencia, were promoted to the second tier last season but have endured a difficult start, earning just two points from their opening four games. Coach Claudio Barragan was recently sacked.
The takeover adds to Messi’s growing football investment portfolio. Earlier this year, he acquired 100% of fifth-tier Spanish club UE Cornella, based near Barcelona.
