The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially parted ways with Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz following a dismal run of results that culminated in a humiliating defeat to The Gambia. The decision brings an abrupt end to the Portuguese manager’s tenure as the GFA seeks to restructure the national team’s technical direction.

The breaking point came after a shocking performance in Accra that saw the Black Stars fall to a heavy defeat against The Gambia, sparking widespread criticism from fans and football stakeholders across the country.
With the national team struggling for consistency and failing to deliver performances expected on the continental stage, the GFA Executive Council moved to terminate the contractual agreement with the veteran coach.
In the immediate aftermath of the match, a visibly defiant Queiroz addressed the media during the post-match press conference. While acknowledging the bitter disappointment of the result, the 73-year-old manager initially refused to resign, insisting that a single setback did not define his record or capability.
“I am the coach in football with the most wins,” Queiroz remarked during the tense media encounter. “And this defeat doesn’t make me a loser. This defeat makes me more alert to the lessons we take from the games and what we have to do in the future, with me or without me. In my life, I have always had one very simple approach in football. Some coaches admit they lose. I never admit that I lose. I had a result that was not positive. But for me, you win or you learn.”
During the interaction, Queiroz also offered a sincere apology to the Ghanaian public for the disappointing outcome, emphasizing that the technical team and players were deeply hurt by the loss. He pointed out that the team’s struggles were part of a broader, systemic trend, noting that Ghana had gone eight consecutive matches without a victory on the road, a clear indication that fundamental changes were required beyond simple squad rotation.
Despite Queiroz’s calls for patience and continuity, the GFA ultimately decided that a change in leadership was necessary to revive the Black Stars’ fortunes. The association is expected to announce an interim technical arrangement in the coming days as they begin the search for a permanent successor to lead the team into their upcoming international assignments.
