President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana has lost its status as a major force in African club football following years of poor performances by Ghanaian clubs in CAF competitions.
President Mahama made the remarks when reigning Ghana Premier League champions Medeama SC and MTN FA Cup holders Nations FC paid a courtesy call on him ahead of their respective CAF assignments.
“Years back, I remember Kotoko and Hearts used to play titanic matches in African competitions, but it is no more. We are no longer the titans of African football, especially at club level, and we need to find out why,” he said.
Medeama face TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi this weekend, hoping to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit suffered at home.
Nations FC are also seeking a comeback after losing 1-0 to Malian side FC Diarra in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary-round tie.
Both Ghanaian clubs will need victories in their respective second legs to advance to the next stage of the competitions.
