Hearts of Oak returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over newcomers Port City at the University of Ghana Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Phobians made a slow start as Port City impressed in the opening minutes, with Emmanuel Intori causing problems down the flanks with his skill and pace. However, the newcomers struggled to create clear-cut scoring opportunities.
Hearts gradually took control and were rewarded in the 20th minute when Dominic Nsobila delivered a beautiful cross for Frank Duku, who rose brilliantly to head home the only goal of the game.
The Phobians maintained their dominance until halftime, but Port City came out strongly after the break in search of an equaliser.
Intori came close to scoring before Kelvin Asigbey intervened, while goalkeeper Benjamin Asare produced a crucial save to deny Samuel Gyimah’s header from a Samuel Aryee Baabu corner.
Despite sustained pressure from Port City, Hearts defended resolutely to secure all three points.
The victory lifts Hearts of Oak to second place with 11 points from six matches.
The Phobians will next travel to Tema to face Vision FC in Week 7, while Port City will look to bounce back when they host Dreams FC.
